The History of Fat Freezing

Fat freezing, known amongst scientists as Cryolipolysis, is one of the health and beauty industry’s most recent forms of non-surgical, non-invasive fat reduction to emerge. It’s effective results and celebrity endorsements mean that this treatment is quickly earning its spot as one of the most popular methods of conquering unwanted wobbly bits and boosting body confidence, without the need to go under the knife.

But how did this concept come about? As with most beauty treatments, it all begins with a scientist and also, in this case, an ice lolly…

Popsicle Panniculitis

In 1970, the scientist in question observed the way a 6 month old teething child’s cheek had become red and swollen on one side after sucking on an ice lolly to soothe her gums. She had been rushed into A&E with worries of a facial abscess, despite displaying no signs of illness.

It was later discovered that the exposure to the ice-cold sweet-treat had caused the development of a firm, swelling of cells in her cheek tissue. After the tissue becomes damaged in this way, the ‘apoptosis’ process is triggered, where these cells die and our body disposes of them as they are no longer needed. This peculiarity was then coined as ‘popsicle panniculitis’.

So, how did this inspire fat freezing?

Years later in 2008, with popsicle panniculitis in mind, Dr. Rox Anderson and Dr. Dieter Manstein had a bright new idea for a non-surgical fat loss procedure. Their thinking? If sucking on an ice lolly can get rid of cheek fat, then this natural process can be utilised in the cosmetic industry to target problem areas with our fat volume, such as thighs, arms and the stomach.

In the midst of experiments and masses of research, this doctoring duo were able to decipher the perfect temperature to remove fat with almost no side effects, making it an incredibly safe and non-invasive procedure. Thus, the concept of Cryolipolysis, better known today as fat freezing, was born.
