Surgical vs Non-Surgical Fat Loss Treatments

We are so lucky to live in a world where anything is possible. Advancements in science mean we know more about our bodies than ever before and with that comes to power to enhance, fix and change them. The cosmetics industry is full of possibilities and there’s now more procedures and treatments available than we can count.

Amongst the most popular are fat loss treatments, something we specialise in at Nu You Aesthetics. We strongly believe that one size does not fit all and there is no singular approach to losing inches and reducing body fat that works for everyone. Whilst it should always be a priority and the first point of call, diet and exercise may only take you so far until you feel like you are hitting a wall. Fat loss treatments are a fantastic alternative and second option when you hit that wall, but how do you decide which one would be best for you?

You may be wondering whether you should go down the surgical or non-surgical route. There are definitely benefits for each and again, it depends on the individual, their lifestyle and the kind of results they desire. We’re here to break down some of the most popular treatments on each end of the spectrum to help you measure up your perfect procedure.

Do fat loss treatments hurt?

It differs from procedure to procedure but all are designed to make you as comfortable as possible. Generally speaking, with surgery comes recovery and ultimately, a level of pain due to the invasive nature of the treatments. For many surgical options, there’s a need for anesthesia as usually, your surgeon will need to make incisions.

For instance, with a gastric sleeve, part of your stomach is removed so as you can imagine, the recovery period can be lengthy and you’ll feel quite sore and tender. Similarly, abdominoplasties, otherwise known as a tummy tuck, not only involve making an incision but also involve tightening the stomach muscles which can make everyday physical exertion difficult during recovery.

As for the non-surgical options, people rarely experience pain and often favour them as they are natural and non-invasive. Some treatments may incur strange and slightly uncomfortable sensations, such as the pummelling massaging sensation of cellulite reduction but this usually only lasts for a short amount of time before your body relaxes and gets used to it.

Recovery and downtime

Again, generally speaking surgery will always involve an element of downtime. This can be anything from a few days to a few weeks, depending on the intensity of the treatment. With liposuction, the anesthesia administered and incision made will result in some recovery time. The general rule of thumb is that you’ll feel fit and able to go back to work within two days, depending on your job, but you may struggle to go back to doing anything too physical for up to two weeks.

Fat-Freezing-Patient

Non-surgical treatments do not require recovery or downtime, so they are perfect for those who are on the go and want to squeeze in a treatment on their lunch break before continuing on with their day. Take Lipofirm’s fat freezing treatment as an example – it takes a speedy 45 minutes and is designed to accelerate the natural process of ‘apoptosis’. This natural approach means you are unlikely to notice or feel the after effects of your body doing what it needs to do to remove the fat – you’ll simply be left with a subtly contoured body.

Will surgery leave me with better results?

Speaking of results, you may assume that non-surgical treatments won’t leave you with as dramatic results as the surgical treatments. Obviously, this is true in the case of big procedures such as tummy tucks and gastric sleeves and these options are not to be taken lightly. They are designed to give dramatic results for, in most cases, obesity.

On a smaller scale however, treatments such as Lipofirm, Brazilian bum lifts and 3D Lipo will give you great, natural and healthy looking results. Depending on the area treated, you may be able to see visible results from your non-surgical treatment straight away to two days afterwards.

With treatments like Lipofirm’s fat freezing, your body will be naturally working to get rid of dead fat cells for up to 12 weeks after so your body may continue to change as time goes on. It is also worth noting that we recommend four fat freezing treatments in order to experience its full potential. For this reason, it may take longer for you to reach your desired shape than it would with something like liposuction, however it is so important that removing fat is done gradually to avoid loose skin and any complications.

The ideal candidate

For most treatments, particularly non-surgical and the more minor surgical options, the ideal candidate is someone in good health who is close to their ideal weight but struggling with stubborn fat and looking for subtle body contouring. Fat loss treatments should not be a quick fix or alternative to exercising and maintaining a good diet.

If you are finding it hard to lose weight due to age, the menopause, post-pregnancy or an injury or illness, a fat loss treatment could be perfect for you. Whether you opt for surgery or non-surgery will be personal preference, however Nu You Aesthetics are happy to give you as much advice as you need to help you decide if a natural, non-surgical and holistic option could be perfect for you.
