By now, you’ve probably heard a lot fat freezing (or CoolSculpting, as it’s branded in the U.S) but you might not be aware of all the details. Whilst it’s not something you can do at home with a bag of ice cubes and some plastic wrap, it’s much kinder on the body than liposuction, and should leave you with no side effects or recovery time.
How does fat freezing work?
Fat freezing, or cryolipolysis, is a non-invasive technique for spot-reducing fat, like stubborn pockets of belly fat or a lingering double chin. To find out more about how and where you can use fat freezing, check out our interactive fat loss treatment map.
Fat freezing is based on the principle of chilling fat cells in order to trigger apoptosis, which is the natural process our bodies go through to remove fat cells when we no longer need them. Fat freezing speeds up this already naturally occurring process by freezing fat cells – and once frozen, the cells die. Your body disposes of the dead fat cells naturally over a short period of time, with very little pain and no recovery time needed.
How long will it take to see results?
Whilst some people see instant results, fat freezing is not an instant, one stop treatment. Unlike liposuction, your body has to naturally dispose of it’s own fat cells, and this can take up to 12 weeks after treatment, so you’ll see more changes as time goes on. It will differ from person to person, but we recommend four treatments to guarantee the full effects.
The results are permanent, and the dead fat cells won’t grow again. However, it’s important to remember that fat freezing doesn’t stop you from regaining new weight in the future, so to avoid disappointment it’s important to pair fat freezing treatments with a healthy lifestyle. The ideal candidate for fat freezing treatments is someone who exercises regularly and eats sensibly and just wants to rid themselves of stubborn fat pockets and sculpt their body a certain way.
