You’ve spent hours of your life in the gym and you are doing all you can to maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle, yet that stubborn fat on your belly just will not shift. It can be very annoying and most of all, discouraging.
Don’t worry – there’s a good chance that it’s not your fault. Unfortunately, there are a few factors that come into play making losing fat in certain areas pretty much impossible.
What could be stopping me from losing fat?
When women and men get to a certain age, they experience a decline in their metabolism, along with a decline in the number of calories that the body needs in order to function normally. Naturally, this means that the body isn’t working as hard to break down fat and as muscles diminish with age, the body tends to use less calories. It can get all the more difficult for women as the menopause comes into play. Their oestrogen and progesterone hormone production slows down and these hormonal changes can make them more likely to gain weight around the abdomen than anywhere else.
Stress can also be affecting your stubborn fat – and we’re not just talking about comfort eating! When you are stressed, the cortisol hormone is released which can in turn increase the amount of fat that your body clings to and enlarge your fat cells. It’s also possible that your genetics come into play when it comes to fat loss and you may be simply naturally apple-shaped and carry your weight around the middle rather than your hips and thighs.
The reason for stubborn fat
So, why is it that the belly is harder to lose fat from than anywhere else? It’s all to do with our alpha and beta receptors. These receptors react differently to the fat breakdown process; beta receptors respond well and accelerate the process whereas alpha receptors don’t respond well and make it harder to lose the fat.
Different areas of our body have different levels of alpha and beta receptors. For instance we generally find it easier to lose fat from our legs, face and arms as these areas usually have a high beta to alpha ratio. Unfortunately, our belly is on the other end of the spectrum, with a high alpha to beta ratio which in turn makes it harder to shed excess fat.
The good news is that you don’t need to work harder at your diet and exercise routine or undergo an invasive procedure to get rid of this fat. The ‘fat freezing’ technique has taken the cosmetic industry by storm. Fat freezing treatments speed up and enhance the natural fat loss process in your body and can target your problem area – whether that’s your belly or somewhere else such as your thighs or arms. It’s safe, simple and incredibly low-risk and results in fat gradually melting away from 6-12 weeks.
